Protect Yourself Against Tetanus

Tetanus is a serious and often fatal disease caused by a toxin released by bacteria present in our environment. The bacteria enter the body through breaks in the skin or wounds caused by contaminated objects

With the arrival of spring, residents should ensure they are protected from a dangerous toxin that may lurk in the soil of their own backyard gardens.

Tetanus or lockjaw is a serious disease that can happen if dirt contaminated with the tetanus germ gets into a cut or wound on a person’s skin. Tetanus causes cramping of the muscles in the neck, arms, legs and stomach, and painful convulsions which can be severe enough to break bones. Even with early treatment, tetanus kills two out of the every 10 people who get it.

Being fully immunized is the most effective way to prevent tetanus. Tetanus immunization is part of the routine schedule for childhood immunizations in Canada, but it's recommended that people of all ages be immunized and have booster shots every 10 years.
