Northumberland Oral Health Coalition

Access to dental care is a challenge for many individuals in this country due to a number of barriers, including transportation, fear, shame, embarrassment, and a lack of knowledge that dental care is important. As the mouth (teeth and gums) is the only part of the body that is excluded from Canada's national health care system and dental treatment is an expensive service, cost is one of the most serious and common barriers to accessing dental care. As a result, only those individuals with dental insurance or sufficient income to pay for dental services can afford to access dental treatment. Residents of Northumberland County are affected by this reality.

The Northumberland Oral Health Coalition (NOHC) has been working diligently since 2005 to address the gap in dental care that exists in the community. NOHC is made up of representatives from local health and social service agencies, dental professionals and members of the public.

NOHC works in partnership with the community to facilitate the ability of ALL local residents to access regular oral care, while empowering people to take ownership over, and maintain good oral health.

In order to have a healthy body, NOHC believes it is necessary to have a healthy mouth.
