Caring for Dentures

Dentures require daily care:

  • clean them at least once a day using a special denture brush (they're stiffer for better scrubbing) and any cleaning agent such as toothpaste, baking soda or one of the many commercial cleaners available at the drugstore

  • if you have partial dentures, clean their metal clasps carefully with a denture or clasp brush

  • to prevent dentures from breaking if they are dropped during cleaning, place a towel or facecloth in the bottom of the sink or fill the sink half-full of lukewarm water

  • try using a nail brush if you find denture brushes hard to handle

Keep Your Pearly Whites White

Although daily brushing of dentures should keep them clean, sometimes extra deposits of stains or tartar appear and are difficult to remove. Here are a few suggestions:

Stain Removal - stains and odours may be removed from a denture by soaking it overnight in a solution of eight ounces water with either one ounce Clorox or any laundry chlorine bleach. Do Not Use Undiluted Bleach.

Tartar Removal - hard deposits may be loosened by soaking the denture overnight in a half and half solution of white vinegar and water.

Many commercial products are also available where oral care products are sold. Denture soaks should be followed by a thorough scrubbing and rinsing of dentures before replacing in mouth.
