April is Oral Health Month:

Get The Facts, Not Fiction!

Good oral health is important for every body!

Not taking care of your teeth and gums can lead to serious dental pain that affects your physical, mental and social well-being. In children, severe dental problems can impact eating habits, the ability to learn in school, and overall growth and development

Regular brushing -- two to three minutes at least twice a day -- and flossing helps to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Seeing a dentist at least once a year is also recommended. That applies to all ages -- Babies & Children, Youth and Adults.

During Oral Health Month in April, arm yourself with facts -- not fiction -- so that your children can grow up cavity-free.

FACT: Children need help brushing their teeth until they are eight years of age

- Because fluoride is not added to local drinking water, adults should support good oral health at home

- Fight cavities by brushing your child's teeth as soon as they appear. Use a small amount of fluoridated toothpaste, at least twice daily especially at bedtime

-Children can grow up cavity-free!

FACT: Free dental care may be available for your child!

- Financial assistance programs are available for youth up to age 17 years

- These programs can cover or offset the cost of dental care

- Contact the Health Unit to see if your child or teen qualifies for support!

FACT: More than one-third of local JK/SK students suffer from tooth decay

- The Health Unit offers a free Fluoride Varnish Program to children in local daycares

- Fluoride varnish is a protective coating brushed on teeth that helps prevent cavities

- It's free, very easy and quick... call the Health Unit at 1-866-888-4577 for more details

FACT: The only safe drink is plain water, so Rethink Your Drink!

- Both naturally-occurring and added sugar can cause cavities

- Frequent sipping on any sugary liquid (even watered-down juice) can cause cavities

- Drink water to quench thirst between meals
