Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI)s

  • Now called STIs not sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)

  • STIs are infections caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites that are spread through close sexual contact with an infected person.

  • STIs can not be caught by using public toilets

  • Many have no noticeable symptoms

  • STIs can seriously affect the health of an infected person if left untreated

  • Infections caused by bacteria can be treated/cured with antibiotics

  • There is no cure for STIs caused by viruses, but treatments may help to control symptoms

  • Infections caused by a parasite are often treatable, but people can easily become reinfected if proper disinfection of personal items (towels, bed sheets, clothing etc) does not occur.
