Thinking About Sex - How Will I Know if I am Ready?

This is a decision only you can make. Things to ask yourself include:

  • Why am I thinking about having sex now?

  • Do I really want to have sex or am I being pressured into it?

  • Do I have reasons for not wanting to have sex now?

  • Would I feel embarrassed or ashamed if other people knew I was having sex?

  • Do I know everything I need to know about birth control and STI protection?

  • If I choose to have sex now, how will I feel afterwards?

You MAY be ready if:

  • You have all the information you need about your choices

  • You know what sex means to you and what's important to you

  • You and your partner understand the risks of becoming sexually active

  • You are able to talk opening about limits with your partner (for example - what you do and don't want to do)

  • You and your partner have talked about protecting yourselves from STIs and unplanned pregnancy

  • You are comfortable with the idea of having a sexual relationship

  • You and your partner are willing to use condoms AND birth control every time you have sex

You are NOT ready to have sex if:

  • You feel pressured

  • Your partner is not ready

  • You can't talk about it openly with your partner

  • You would feel embarrassed or ashamed if other people knew you were having sex

  • You don't have a way to protect yourselves against STIs and unplanned pregnancy

  • You or your partner need to get drunk or stoned to have sex

Remember, saying "no" to sex now, is not saying "no" to sex forever - YOU need to decide when the timing is right for YOU!
