The bacteria that causes tuberculosis (TB) has been around for centuries, but the 1948 discovery of antibiotics to treat TB meant the severe, and often fatal disease had a cure.

Although people may think TB is a disease of the past, TB still causes deaths in Canada and continues to be a leading cause of death in many other parts of the world.

To help prevent and control TB, public health units across Ontario are responsible for:

  • monitoring each client's progress and improved health status

  • ensuring appropriate treatment and testing occurs

  • providing free treatment for clients

  • investigating to find contacts of people with active TB disease

TB is preventable, treatable and curable.

If you have any questions about TB, contact the Health Unit toll-free at 1-866-888-4577.
