How Family and Friends Can Support the Breastfeeding Mother

One of the most important factors in being able to breastfeed is having support. Here is how family and friends can help support the breastfeeding mother in their lives:

  • learn about breastfeeding by reading or attending a breastfeeding class

  • help make mom comfortable, and keep her company while she breastfeeds

  • bring baby to mom when showing early signs of hunger

  • do skin-to-skin, burp and comfort baby in between breastfeeding

  • give mom lots of praise and understanding

  • help mom with household jobs, errands and looking after other children

  • assist mom with finding help if problems or questions about breastfeeding arise
