Early Childhood Tooth Decay/Early Childhood Caries

Early childhood tooth decay or Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is a preventable dental problem that affects babies and young children. ECC can happen when liquids that contain sugar stay in the child’s mouth for a long time. Sweet liquids include milk, formula, breast milk and fruit juice.

Your Child Can Grow Up Cavity-Free!

Follow these tips to prevent ECC and help keep your child's mouth healthy:

  • Clean your baby's teeth with a soft clean washcloth or soft bristled brush at least twice a day as soon as they appear since it is never too early to start good dental habits!

  • Lift the lip to check for signs of tooth decay since it is important to get to know your child's mouth and see your dentist if you notice anything unusual.

  • Help your kids brush their teeth two times a day until they can cursive write (not print) - since young children don't have the coordination to brush correctly on their own.

  • Avoid giving your child sugary drinks or sweet snacks between meals - since frequent sipping on sugary liquids or snacking on sweet foods increases your child's chances of getting cavities.

  • Be a good role model...brush and floss daily, avoid smoking and choose healthy foods most often - since healthy habits are always the best choice for good dental health and good general health for the entire family!
