Communicable Disease Control
While becoming healthy is important, our Communicable Disease Control (CDC) staff work just as hard at helping you and your family stay healthy. Our staff work to prevent the spread of contagious diseases in the community through immunization programs, investigations of outbreaks and the follow-up of reportable diseases. Working closely with health care providers, hospitals and long-term care facilities, our CDC staff help protect you from communicable diseases.
CDC staff also provide sexual health education and services to residents of Northumberland and Haliburton counties and the City of Kawartha Lakes. Free testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, low cost/free birth control, pregnancy testing and access to emergency contraception is available through the Sexual Health Clinics. The Health Unit offers Sexual Health Clinics in each county and clinics are staffed by Sexual Health Nurses and doctors who offer comprehensive, confidential and free information, education and clinical services in a safe, friendly, non-judgmental environment.
