- Local Credit Union Lending Its Support to Assist Student Nutrition Programs in Area -

(NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY) – A local financial institution is again showing its interest in ensuring children attending schools are well-nourished and ready to learn.

For yet another year, Kawartha Credit Union is donating funds to support the work of Northumberland Food For Thought (NFFT). Recently, it contributed $2,000 to support student nutrition programs that require assistance with purchasing equipment and appliances or covering food purchases.

Since 2004, Kawartha Credit Union has contributed a total of $9,000 to support NFFT. The funds come from the credit union’s Community Involvement Program, which puts a priority on assisting programs that support the health and education of local youth.

“For almost a decade, Kawartha Credit Union has been a steady supporter of student nutrition programs in the area. We certainly appreciate its continuing generosity to provide schools with the equipment and appliances needed to prepare healthy meals for students,” says Susan Greenwood, Community Development Co-ordinator with NFFT.

Northumberland Food For Thought is the non-profit partnership that co-ordinates student nutrition programs in the area. These programs are free and voluntary, and provide food to approximately 3,200 students each day in Northumberland. By providing students with breakfasts or snacks, they can better learn and concentrate in class without the distraction of an empty stomach.

Students come to school hungry for a variety of reasons, Greenwood adds. Long bus rides to school, early morning practices and hurried morning routines can all be factors.
