- Affordable, Used Sports Equipment Available at Gear Swap 2013 Event in Port Hope on September 28 -

(PORT HOPE) – If your family is gearing up for recreational activities this fall and winter, check out a gear swap event later this month to help get you in the game.

The Northumberland Sports Council and JOIN IN Northumberland partnership are organizing Gear Swap 2013. The Gear Swap event lets people exchange or buy affordable, used sports equipment. Gear Swap 2013 takes place on Saturday, September 28, from 10 am to 3 pm at the Town Park Recreation Centre (62 McCaul St.) in Port Hope.

“Whether you have old sports equipment laying around that you need to get rid of or want to trade, or whether you need to get affordable, used equipment for your family, this is the place to be to get sports stuff,” says Sarah Johnston, the JOIN IN Northumberland Activity Coordinator.

Gear Swap 2013 is more than just a buy, sell and trade event. Besides the great deals that will be available, organizers are also planning to have a barbecue and offer door prizes to people. There is no admission fee to the event from 11 am to 3 pm. However, for those who want early bird entry, a $2 per family admission fee will apply from 10 am to 11 am. All funds raised from Gear Swap 2013 will go to support KidSport Northumberland, the local chapter of the national not-for-profit organization that provides financial assistance for registration fees and equipment to children and teens.

Local residents who want to donate used equipment that is in good condition can drop off items at the Town Park Recreation Centre on Friday, September 27. These items will be sorted and made available free-of-charge to people the following day. No helmets or personal protective gear will be exchanged at the event.

For vendors who want to set up for Gear Swap 2013, a $5 per table fee does apply. To sign up for a table, or for more information about the event, contact the Town Park Recreation Centre at (905) 885-7908.

Being involved in structured sports and recreational activities benefits is good for children’s health, and can boost their self-esteem and resilience, Johnston says. However, the dollar costs of taking part in sports activities can prevent some families from joining in, she adds.

“The Gear Swap event can help break down barriers by offering families access to free or reasonably-priced equipment,” Johnston notes. “By making it easier for children and youth to get in the game, we can help them thrive and get active.”

JOIN IN Northumberland works to increase access to recreational opportunities in the community.
