- Low-Cost Rabies Vaccination Clinics Coming to Haliburton County on October 19 -

(HALIBURTON COUNTY) – If you care about your pet's health, then ensure your dog or cat gets vaccinated against rabies.

Local pet owners have that opportunity at a Low-Cost Rabies Vaccination Clinic set for Saturday, October 19, from 9 am to noon. Haliburton Veterinary Services is again holding the clinic for dogs and cats at the Haliburton Fire Hall. Cost is $25 per animal (cash only), and no examination of the pet will take place at the clinic. Dogs need to be on leashes and cats should be in a carrier.

If this date does not work, veterinarians in Bancroft, Boulter, Coe Hill, Gilmour and Maynooth are also offering low-cost rabies vaccination clinics this coming Saturday (October 5). For more information, call the local Health Unit office at (705) 457-1391, toll-free at 1-866-888-4577 or visit .

“We're pleased to again partner with local veterinarians to offer an easy and affordable way for people to protect their pets from the risk of rabies,” says Richard Ovcharovich, Manager of Environmental Health with the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit. “Rabies is no way for a family pet to die, so the clinics are a chance for local residents to give their pets the protection they deserve.”

Rabies is a serious virus that attacks the nerves and brain of an animal. People and pets can get rabies when an animal infected with rabies licks, bites or scratches them, and in the process, breaks the skin. If left untreated, rabies is fatal.

In this area, Ovcharovich notes, it is mandatory that pet owners get rabies vaccination for their dogs and cats. The vaccination of all domestic dogs and cats involved in animal bite incidents are routinely checked. Failure to comply with the mandatory vaccination for your pet can result in a substantial fine for an animal owner should charges be laid.
