SWEET TREAT

- Free Dental Cleanings Offered in Port Hope and Area as Part of ‘Gift From the Heart’ Event -

A gift from the heart awaits local residents who care about their oral health, but cannot access regular dental care.

A trio of local dental hygienists are serving up an early Valentine Day’s treat by joining colleagues across Canada in the sixth-annual Gift From the Heart Day on Saturday, February 8. The event sees dental hygienists offer their skills free-of-charge to help those who cannot afford dental treatment. By doing this, dental hygienists want to boost access to dental care and highlight the link between oral health and overall health.

“Normally you would associate Valentine Day’s with the heart, but the Gift From the Heart event is designed to get people thinking about their teeth,” says Mary Ito, a Cobourg-based Registered Dental Hygienist and owner of the Northumberland Dental Hygiene Clinic.

Ito is participating for the sixth straight year in Gift From the Heart, and says she and other dental hygienists do it “to give back to their community one smile at a time.”

Ito, who is also a member of the Northumberland Oral Health Coalition, notes that initiatives such as Gift From the Heart Day help to break down barriers to dental care in the area. “I see firsthand how many people in our community struggle to pay for proper oral health care,” she says. “The Gift From the Heart event is intended to provide dental care to those in need who might not be able to get treatment elsewhere.”

As part of Gift From the Heart Day, Ito will be joined by other dental professionals in providing free dental care and cleanings at the Port Hope Community Health Centre (99 Toronto Road) on February 8. Local residents can call the Port Hope Community Health Centre at (905) 885-2626 to put their name on a list for an appointment. Callers will be asked a short list of questions to determine their treatment needs. Accepted clients will subsequently be contacted to confirm appointment times.

Two other dental hygienists in the area are also offering free dental treatment as part of Gift From the Heart Day on February 8. They are: Fresh Dental Hygiene Care in Port Hope (905-800-0288) and Dental Hygiene by Marnie in Lindsay (705-879-1689).

Visit the Gift From the Heart website for more information about the event and a complete list of participating locations.
