- Upcoming Prenatal and Breastfeeding Classes Can Help Parents Prepare For Life With Their New Babies -

(CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES) – Parents-to-be can get back to class with the Health Unit to help prepare for the arrival of their new baby.

The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit provides free education programs throughout the year to help parents in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Starting in mid-March, and running again during the month of May, the Health Unit is offering a multi-week class that helps expectant parents prepare for the birth of babies, as well as another one-time session focusing on breastfeeding.“

A baby does not come with an owner’s manual, so that is why we encourage people to attend these programs to gain insight and information on becoming a parent,” says Cindy Hutchinson, a Family Health Nurse with the HKPR District Health Unit who will lead both classes.

The Health Unit programs run as follows:

  • A Healthy Beginnings Prenatal Class starts on March 13, and continues the following four Thursdays (March 20, 27, April 3 and 10) from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. It also runs Thursday nights in May. The prenatal class will help participants learn about labour and birth, transition to parenting, taking care of mom and baby, and feeding babies. Pregnant women are encouraged to bring a support person to the class. Each participant receives a free copy of the Healthy Beginnings pregnancy guidebook.
  • A Preparation for Breastfeeding Class is set for March 20 (6:30-8:30 pm), and again on May 8 (6:30-8:30 pm). The class provides information about the importance of breastfeeding, how to get a great start with breastfeeding, and resources and supports in the community. Attending the class is ideal for all expectant parents, whether it is their first, second or third child. Partners are encouraged to attend as well. Participants will also receive a free copy of the Breastfeeding Matters resource guide.

Both classes take place at the Health Unit’s office in Lindsay (108 Angeline St. S.). Pre-registration is required. To sign up or find out more about the classes, call the Health Unit at (705) 324-3569, ext. 2308, or email . Information about other Health Unit services and programs that support healthy families will also be provided at these classes.

According to Hutchinson, attending either of these classes is beneficial in another way. “There is strength in numbers,” she says. “At these classes, you are meeting and interacting with other parents who are going through the same challenges. Being in a group lets you share advice and experiences that can make the adjustment to having a baby, caring for a newborn or starting to breastfeed easier for everyone.”
