SOLUTIONS TO WORK STRESS

- Expert on Workplace Mental Health Coming to Cobourg in April to Help Local Workplaces Develop Strategies for Success -

(NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY) – One of Canada’s leading experts on workplace mental health is coming to Cobourg in April to make a business case for why organizations need to develop strategies for addressing a multi-billion-dollar problem.

Mary Ann Bayntonworks with employers, organizations, unions and associations to improve, address and resolve mental health issues at work. Baynton is also author of Resolving Workplace Issues and co-author with Dr. Martin Shain of Preventing Workplace Meltdown: An Employer’s Guide to Maintaining a Psychologically Safe Workplace.

“When you support employees in dealing with mental health issues, you help them stay productive and healthy. That’s good for the individual and the organization!” says Baynton. “Inaction on mental health issues may end up costing more in the long-run.”

According to the Mental Health Commission of Canada, it is estimated mental health problems affect one in five people and cost the Canadian economy approximately $50-billion every year.

Baynton will be the featured speaker at an all-day workshop entitled ‘Solutions 2 Work Stress: Strategies for Success’ taking place on April 9 at the Cobourg Lions Centre. The event is organized by the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ride District Health Unit and the Workplace Wellness in Northumberland committee.

“Mary Ann Baynton is renowned for assisting workplaces and their staff move beyond mental health problems to reclaim dignity, preserve civility, restore productivity and improve working lives,” says organizer Lisa van der Vinne, a Health Promoter with the HKPR District Health Unit. “We are very pleased that Mary Ann can share her expertise with workplaces in our area.”

Cost for the Solutions 2 Work Stress workshop is $175 per person, which includes breakfast, lunch and morning/afternoon snacks. To register or find out more information, call the Health Unit toll-free at 1-866-888-4577, ext. 1210, email healthyworkplaces@hkpr.on.ca or visit www.solutions2workstress.ca.

Van der Vinne says the Solutions 2 Work Stress workshop is ideal for human resource professionals, business owners, managers, supervisors, occupational health professionals, union leaders and members of health and safety committees. The workshop will help participants learn practical strategies to prevent work stress, address mental health stigma, support employees with mental health concerns, and develop and maintain a psychologically safe and healthy workplace. Baynton will also introduce and offer ideas to implement the new Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace Standard. The voluntary Standard provides tools and resources to help workplaces promote and improve their approach to mental well-being among workers.

“It doesn’t matter if your workplace is large or small, public or private, attending this workshop is a worthwhile investment of time and money,” van der Vinne says. “You will come away with concrete ideas to inspire effective action for healthy change.”
