- Dedicated Volunteers Celebrated For Their Work to Support Local School Nutrition Programs -

(NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY) – A dedicated group of volunteers is making a world of difference right in their own backyards.

Northumberland Food For Thoughtis celebrating the work of its volunteers and supporters who donate their time at 38 school nutrition programs in the area. It is estimated that these volunteers contribute more than 45,000 hours each year to Northumberland Food For Thought. Put another way, this figure works out to more than five years in total volunteer time commitment.

“When you consider hometown heroes, look no further than our group of volunteers,” says Susan Greenwood, Community Development Co-ordinator with Northumberland Food For Thought. “These individuals freely give of their time to help ensure students in Northumberland County are well-nourished and can learn to their full potential at school.”

Northumberland Food For Thought is organizing an event to celebrate the work of its volunteers. Members of the media are welcome to attend the following for photo and interview opportunities:

WHAT: Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon

WHERE: Cobourg Lion’s Centre (157 Elgin Street East)

WHEN: Monday, May 12, 11 am to 1:30 pm

According to Greenwood, there is an ongoing need for school nutrition programs. “Many local students come to school hungry for a variety of reasons, not just poverty,” she says. “Long bus rides, early morning practices and hurried morning routines can all be factors. Our volunteers see this need, and are there to assist with these programs at their local schools.”
