TON OF FAMILY FUN

- ‘Family’ and ‘Fun’ Come Together at Family Gala Event in Lindsay on May 24 –

(CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES) – Who needs to get their fix of cartoon characters on television or computer tablets when they can see them live and in person at a family-friendly event taking place in Lindsay?

Local families can meet Dora the Explorer, Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Kung Fu Panda, and Minnie Mouse at the 10th annual Family Gala event in the City of Kawartha Lakes. This year’s version of the free, family-oriented event takes place in Lindsay on Saturday, May 24, from 9 am to 1 pm at the Boys and Girls Club of Kawartha Lakes (107 Lindsay Street South).

The Family Gala is open to all families and children, and includes kids’ activities, entertainment, a free lunch, and a gently-used clothing/toy giveaway. While providing fun for families and children, the Family Gala is also a showcase for the many services and resources available to families in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

“The Family Gala is all about connecting families with fun and facts, and making everything available under one roof,” says Kelly Taylor, an event organizer and a Family Health Nurse with the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit.

For children, there are many free, fun activities being offered during the Family Gala, including the Wings of Discovery Science Exploration, face and hair painting, Crayola Craft Room, play area, reading activities, and live music with local entertainers Rick and Terri. Taylor says the musical duo performed at the first Family Gala 10 years ago, so it is exciting to bring them back this year.

For parents and caregivers, the Family Gala is an opportunity to find out about resources and services available for families in the area. “Often it can be hard for local families to find a particular resource in the community,” Taylor says, “and that is where the Family Gala can be valuable to help connect programs and services with the people that need them.”

One of the most popular parts of the Family Gala is the free children’s item giveaway that takes place during the event. It is a chance for people to pick up used children’s clothing, toys, books and DVDs and other items. All donated items have been sorted and checked to ensure they are clean and appropriate for reuse.

After working up an appetite looking at all the exciting things at the Family Gala, organizers encourage people to enjoy a free lunch that will include pizza, subs, apples, and cupcakes.
