- Local Coalition Distributing Resource Cards to Highlight Breastfeeding Supports in the Area -

(NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY) – Think pink, if you are looking for breastfeeding support services in the area.

The Northumberland Breastfeeding Coalition is excited to launch a new Breastfeeding Support Services card. The distinctive, pink-coloured resource card lists information on local breastfeeding classes, support providers, and locations for breast pump rentals and supplies.

The coalition’s goal is to distribute the cards to all expectant mothers in Northumberland County through community partners, including local hospitals, midwives, prenatal educators, lactation consultants, breastfeeding clinics and support groups.

“The information card is part of the coalition’s vision to ensure all women in Northumberland County feel supported to breastfeed their babies,” says Laura Abbasi, a breastfeeding coalition member, and a Registered Dietitian with the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit. “That’s what the coalition is all about – raising awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and supporting women to breastfeed their babies.”

While the benefits and importance of breastfeeding are well-known, Abbasi notes that many new mothers do not breastfeed for as long as they would like due to a lack of support. The resource cards were created to highlight local services and programs to better support breastfeeding women, she adds.

The World Health Organization recommends women exclusively breastfeed their infants for the first six months of life, as breast milk is the best food for optimal growth.

The Northumberland Breastfeeding Coalition was formed in April 2014 by a group of local residents, including breastfeeding mothers, lactation consultants, prenatal educators, midwives and social workers. The coalition also includes representatives from the Health Unit, the La Leche League, Northumberland Family Health Team and Northumberland Hills Hospital.
