- Free Quit-Smoking Support Program Coming to Haliburton, Northumberland and Kawartha Lakes -

It won’t cost a cent to attend, but the results could pay off handsomely for people trying to quit smoking.

Local smokers have four final opportunities in 2016 to attend a no-cost, quit-smoking workshop being offered in their community. The Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients (S.T.O.P.) Program provides smokers with five weeks of free nicotine patches, as well as educational material and other resources to help them quit.

The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is partnering with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) to bring the S.T.O.P. Program to the following locations:

• In Haliburton County on Wednesday, October 26.

• In the City of Kawartha Lakes on Saturday, November 19 and Thursday, December 8.

• In Northumberland County on Saturday, November 26.

To see if they quality for the S.T.O.P. Program, people can call the Health Unit toll-free at 1-866-888-4577.

“If you want to quit smoking, attending a S.T.O.P. Program in your area is a worthwhile investment of your time. These are the last sessions of the year, so be sure to book your space today,” says Karen Taylor, a Public Health Nurse with the HKPR District Health Unit.

Since it was first offered in 2005, the S.T.O.P. Program has been very popular and successful in helping thousands of Ontarians attempt to quit smoking. Locally, dozens of residents have also taken part in S.T.O.P. Program sessions offered in the Health Unit region.

Research shows that the use of patches and other nicotine replacement therapy can increase the chances of people becoming smoke-free. “Nicotine patches are very effective, but can be expensive for some people,” Taylor notes. “The fact that patches are free through the S.T.O.P. Program is just another reason to sign up for a session.”
