- Healthy Workplace Month Brings Reminder to Support Mental Health at Work -

There is no health without mental health, especially at work.

That’s the message the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is highlighting for workplaces in Haliburton County, Northumberland County and the City of Kawartha Lakes. During Healthy Workplace Month in October, local organizations are being encouraged to support the mental health of their staff.

“When workplaces take the time and effort to support employee mental health, they are making a valuable investment that can pay off in many ways,” says Lisa van der Vinne, a Health Promoter with the HKPR District Health Unit.

According to the Mental Health Commission of Canada, in any given year, one in five Canadians will experience a mental health problem or illness, costing the economy more than $50 billion. With statistics like these, van der Vinne says a strong business case can be made for implementing programs and policies that support workplace mental health.

“Workplaces that support staff members help to keep employees more engaged, productive and healthy at work, while reducing sick time,” she says. “That’s good for the individual and the entire organization!”

Van der Vinne encourages workplaces to think of mental health in the same way they do other health and safety issues. “The mental health and safety of employees is just as important as their physical health and safety,” she says. “That’s just common sense, when you consider that both physical and mental factors can affect the well-being of staff.”
