COUNTDOWN TO D-DAY

- ‘Healthy Beginnings’ Class Can Help Pregnant Parents Prepare For Arrival of Baby -

(HALIBURTON COUNTY) – If you are pregnant and counting down to ‘D-day’ with apprehension, there is an opportunity in May to help put your mind at ease about the birth of your baby.

A free Healthy Beginnings Prenatal Class starts on Wednesday, May 1 in Haliburton County, and continues for the following three Wednesday evenings (May 8, 15 and 22). The class is geared to help expectant mothers and their partners prepare for their D-day – or delivery day – by providing information on the birth and care of their babies. The prenatal class will be led by Cindy Hutchinson, a Family Health Nurse with the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit.

Spaces are still available in the prenatal class, and parents-to-be are encouraged to call the Health Unit as soon as possible to secure a spot. To sign up or get more information, call (705) 457-1391 or (705) 324-3569. You can also e-mail prenatalclasses@hkpr.on.ca

“For parents-to-be, the prenatal class is a great way to help plan for a healthy pregnancy, labour and delivery,” says Hutchinson. “The class also covers important topics for after your baby is born – everything from care and safety, breastfeeding and adjusting to life with your newborn.”

Each participant also receives a free copy of the Healthy Beginnings pregnancy guidebook, and other resources and information about Health Unit services and programs that support healthy families.

According to Hutchinson, the prenatal classes in Haliburton County prove to be very popular with expectant parents. “The class size tends to be small and relaxed, which makes the environment great for interaction and information sharing,” she says. “There is also a lot of benefit to having parents-to-be share their stories, questions and concerns. In many cases, others in the class can relate to what is being said, and they soon realize they are not alone in going through these experiences.”
