RE: Transition to HPV9 Vaccine

Merck Canada Inc. has confirmed that the HPV4 vaccine is no longer available for order in Canada as the company is transitioning to producing the HPV9 vaccine.

Current recommendations from the MOHLTC and National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) are as follows:

• Offer HPV9 vaccine to complete an initiated HPV4 series.

• Offer HPV9 vaccine to initiate a series for eligible students who had not yet received a dose of HPV4 to date.

The HPV9 vaccine is publicly funded for the following age groups:

• Grades 7 to 12 females.

• Grade 7 males (born on or after 2004/Jan/01 and in grades 7 to 12).

• Males 9 to 26 years of age who have sex with men.

Individuals require 2 or 3 doses of the HPV9 vaccine, depending on their age and immune status. Please consult Ontario’s Publicly Funded Immunization Schedule or the Health Unit if you need assistance in determining what dosage the individual requires.

The HPV9 vaccine is NOT publicly funded for:

• Individuals who have completed the HPV4 series.

• Individuals who have completed a mixed series of HPV4 and HPV9.

If an individual who has completed a mixed series, wishes to be vaccinated with a complete series of HPV9, they will need to purchase the additional HPV9 vaccine doses privately.

Should you require further information, please contact the Health Unit at 1-866-888-4577 ext. 1507.
