Healthy Babies, Healthy Children

The Healthy Babies, Healthy Children program helps pregnant mothers and families with newborns to children age six who need help due to medical, emotional or social issues.

Family Health nurses from the Health Unit call all new moms within 48 hours of being discharged from the hospital and offer to make a home visit. Nurses can help with feeding issues, breastfeeding problems, and any other concerns new parents may have. The nurse can also discuss the needs of the family and help make arrangements for them to access additional support services. As well as the nurses, family home visitors from the Health Unit can visit some families and provide information, teach parenting skills and show families how to use community services.

Under the Healthy Babies, Healthy Children program, Family Health nurses promote the healthy development of children and can screen children for developmental delays and refer families agencies for additional support.

Anyone can make a referral of a family to the program, however anyone making a referral should call the Health Unit to see if they meet the admission requirements of the program.

For more information, call the Health Unit toll-free at 1-866-888-4577.
