Health for Life

About Us

H4L - stress management workshopHealth for Life began in 1998 as The Heart Connection. The goal of the five-year project was to promote heart health and reduce rates of heart disease in Northumberland County, Haliburton County and the City of Kawartha Lakes. The focus was appropriate for an area of Ontario where ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women.

Two years into its mandate, The Heart Connection was at a crossroads. To remain relevant and grow in the future, many in the project felt its focus had to broaden to include other chronic diseases. Health data backed this up, since chronic diseases often took as much toll on local residents as ischemic heart disease.

In April 2002, The Heart Connection changed its name to Health For Life to reflect its expanded focus. The project's new aim was to help people live healthier to reduce their rates of heart disease and other chronic diseases such as diabetes, stroke, osteoporosis, and some types of cancer. This expanded focus fit in perfectly with Health For Life's three-pronged message -- eat well, be active and be smoke-free -- which was even more appropriate to prevent a wider range of diseases.

Since then, Health For Life has grown considerably and connected with new partners. Our emphasis has also changed. While education is still very important, Health For Life puts more effort in advocating and creating supportive environments and healthy public policy. Our goal is to make healthy lifestyle choices the easy one for people to do!
